New drug will save NHS hundreds of millions of pounds 2 October 2006

NHS researchers at Hammersmith Hospital in West London have developed a new drug for Hepatitis C patients that will save the NHS hundreds of millions of pounds a year. It costs just a fraction of the current treatment and it will make treatment affordable for millions of Hepatitis C sufferers worldwide.

An inflatable stocking could provide relief for thousands of elderly people suffering mobility problems due to artery disease, according to Imperial College London researchers at Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and Ealing Hospitals NHS Trust.

Minimally invasive EVAR still looking good after four years 15 June 2005

The findings of two UK clinical trials targeting the third biggest cause of sudden death in Britain suggest that the initial benefits of a new minimally invasive surgical technique are maintained at four years for low risk patients. However, for high risk patients - for whom the technique was designed in the first place - endovascular aneurysm repair offers no benefit.

A 'primary angioplasty' service for heart attack patients costs the NHS less than current treatment, in addition to saving more lives, according to a comprehensive study of over 400 patients at Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust in London.

Gene mutation in Crohn’s disease stops body-bug chat 18 May 2005
A gene commonly mutated in Crohn’s disease sufferers is responsible for allowing the body’s immune system to ‘chat’ to microbes in the gut. Researchers at Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and Imperial College London who have uncovered the role of this gene say that it will now be possible to develop better tests for this debilitating disease, and will help researchers to uncover the genetic basis of Crohn’s and similar inflammatory bowel diseases.

New drug combination prevents breast cancer growth pre-surgery 17 May 2005

A new type of drug originally developed for lung cancer can reduce the size of breast cancer tumours when taken in combination with other drugs. A London-based group of scientists, reporting today (Tuesday 17 May) in The Lancet Oncology, say that taking the new drug combination prior to surgery could make breast cancer surgery less invasive and more effective, and reduce the risk of cancer spreading to other parts of the body.

Cooling lessens brain damage in sick newborn babies. 28 January 2005
Cooling the brains of babies deprived of oxygen at birth can reduce the risk of brain damage and cerebral palsy, according to an international study published today (January 28) in the Lancet on-line.
